What Motivates Us – Purpose, Autonomy, and Mastery

Piggy-backing on the article I recently wrote regarding purpose, I stumbled across an amazing video adapted from a talk given by New York Times bestselling author, Daniel Pink, at the RSA (Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce).

Pink discusses what motivates us and delves into three elements that encompass a purposeful life:

  1. Purpose: the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves
  2. Autonomy: the urge to direct our own lives
  3. Mastery: the desire to get better at something that matters

This is a great video. The message is good and the medium holds your attention. Thanks for posting it.

  2. Interesting video to watch; it really puts motivational factors into perspective. As Orrin Woodward discusses in his book: RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for life, “It is only when passion, potential and profits intersect that one can truly feel that they are living a purposeful life”. This video really highlights how each of these three areas could differ, based on what factors motivates an individual. Thank you for sharing this Catherine!
